Earlier today I picked up a load of State Quarters in Harris folders.

Most of them are stuck in with sticky tape - it seems as they are almost slightly too small for the holes in the folders. I'm guessing that they need a very firm push to fit properly?

Is there a safe way to push the coins so that they fit properly without causing marking/fingerprints to the coins or damage to the folders?

Also what is the best way to remove sticky tape residue?

Thanks

Best way I foudn to get coins into Whitman or Harris folders leaves marks ont he folder. Take one of those orange prescription medicine bottles that is jsut under the size of the coina nd push one side of the coin in and use the bottle to coax the other side in. Sometimes you get lucky and no marks are left on them, but the holders have some safe-lock thing that never is explained how it works to get the coins in. To me the folder is of les value than having the coins in it, so I let the marks be on the top where the year and mintage aren't so I can still read that under the coin.

Acetone (not nail polish remover, pure acetone) for the tape residue. And to push coins into folders I use a coin tube (one of the tubes to store coins) I don't know why I go to the trouble, I only put circulation sets in folders, anything UNC goes in albums for me. And yes, they're definitely snug, they "pop" when they're set properly.. Sometimes they're quite hard to get in depending on the series...

Use something hard with a soft end to it. I have a rubber grip on a tool that I push into my Whitman folders. They're really tough sometimes.

You could just use your fingers, but place a piece of SaranWrap between the coin and your finger so as not to leave any oil or fingerprint residue. Your fingers are soft, and unlike most tools should't scratch anything, unless we are talking about Proof coins.

As stated acetone should remove any tape residue fairly quickly.

Well, as for getting them into the holes, I'll tell you what I do. I get a quarter I don't care much about and firmly push it into the holes, to sort of make the holes "larger". When I feel I can push them in and out with ease, I get the coins I actually want in to put in the folders.

The only way I know of to not get fingerprints on your coins is to wear cotton gloves when you handle them. You can get these gloves pretty cheaply, and let me tell you, they are worth every penny.

When you put the coins in the album, make sure you have it laying flat on a hard surface; you won't bend it that way.

If you really want to get a coin into the slots allocated for a coin, the main thing is to start by putting the ocin in on an angle. This means start at one edge of the coin and slowly push on the edge not yet into the slot. Use anything except your bare fingers. Some use a rubber malleet and just pound them into place. I suggest just using a soft cloth for this process. Using a larger coin to make the slots larger is defeating the purpose on the design of those Folders.
Folders are purposely made with the top of the slot smaller than the bottom. By that I mean the part away from the baking paper is the bottom and the top is where you put the coin in. This sort of tapered design is so that once the coin is snapped into place, it does not easily fall out. Of course worn coins are a bit smaller so fall into those slots easier. They also fall out easier. This is why so many kids wet that shinny stuff on the back of the slots with spit. That is glue left over from the manufacturing of the Folders. Wetting it reactivates the glue and the coins usually stay in place. Of course this effects the rear of the coins.
The best thing to do with those Folders is to not use them. Use an Album instead. More expensive but well worth it in the end.
