Hello all-

I've recently been looking through my small coin collection, and spotted what looks like a double die on a Liberty Head Nickel 1883. I checked the Cherry Pickers Guide 5th. ed., and see an 1883 variety, but it's not mine.

Question: What does a person typically do if they've discovered, what might possibly be, unknown variety?

Mine has the doubling on the reverse in the word 'United'.

Thanks for any opinions in advance; greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to get a good pic. The macro setting on my Nikon is getting a nice image of the coin, but the doubling is very small and on the very tops of the word 'United'. I'm not getting the doubling to show currently. I'm still trying to get...

And thanks for the welcome!

Try holding a jewelers' loupe in front of the lens. This will magnify and clarify the coin in question much more effectively than without. Just be prepared to do a lot of exerrimentation.

This is the best I can get using Light Room and the 'Optimizer' provided by CCF. If you look at 'United' You can just make out the doubling, but under my 10X you can see on the top of nearly every letter.

If this were a previously unknown variety, how would that affect value?

Some years back, when I had personal contact with both Bill Fivaz and J.T. Stanton, I questioned why some of my Indian Head cent varieties were not listed in the CherryPickers' Guide, their reply was not all varieties are listed in the Guide, only those of interest, (I do not remember the exact reply, but it did make sense that not all minor varieties can be listed).

On another forum, I was pointed here: http://varietyvista.com/CONECA%20Ma...Listings.htm

The contributor suggested this site as well: http://www.libertynickels.org/variety.php

But, I'm not finding my double die anywhere. The person who replied on the other forum also informed me that the CPG does not list all varieties, but pointed to these sites for complete listings. But alas, it's not there.

I'm hoping I discovered something here.

Carter,

I can't see the doubling in any of your images. I wonder if what you have is "strike doubling." This is common in early nickels, and not considered a doubled die. Have you looked at that possibility?

Carter, Excellent images! Clearly something going on, but I'm not sure what to call it. Anyone else?

From the better pictures on the other forum I'd say it is NOT a doubled die. Might be Machine Doubling, might even be a double striking but I would have to see similarly high detailed images of other areas.
