What book do the experts recommend I read as I am a beginning coin collector. I want it to include the commemorative business end of it also.

Hi Charles! Well, I'm no expert, but the best book I can recommend for a beginning collector is the " Red Book". It's got all the information you need, and you can get it at any bookstore. Welcome to the forum!

Hi Charles,
Welcome!
Perhaps the best starter book is Yeoman's Red Book "A Guide Book of United States coins". It covers commems.
Here's a llink National Dealer posted re commem books:
http://www.stantonbooks.com/books_commems.htm
I don't recommend the Hodders basic guide to commems, however...

Ha ha... *cough*

Welcome, charles! Are you planning on collecting U.S. coins, or coins from other countries, or both? I don't have many books yet, but I would recommend Coin World as a good weekly publication to educate you and keep you up to date on the coin market!

Regards,
~neuron

We Dream of it causing "wealth"....Good one!

RedBook is my number one pick as a quick accurate reference source. It is inexpensive and the large binder ring versions out last the standard bindings! Welcome aboard Charles!!!!Mike

Hi Charles

Welcome to the forum !!

RedBook is a good choice for the beginning collector,it will help you to Identify US coins, and give you the information on what they are made of ,who designed them, and a short grading explanation of each series.

always enjoy Pictures and conversation !!!

For US...

I will also go with the Red Book. The ANA grading might be a good choice also. I have heard decent reviews of Coin Collecting for Dummies too.

Then, once you get an idea of what you wnat to collect, etc, there are a number of specialized books out there.

Hello Charles,

first of all, welkom to the forem, best place in town to be

What I diddn't see, is what do you want to collect?, only US coinage, or foreighn coins as well?
Of cource, all the "yanks" are telling you to take the Red Book, this is a wise choice if you only want to collect the US coins, but.......

If you want to collect some more country's that are on this little world, I would suggest you to look in the Krause Standard world catalog, this covvers all the country's in the world, mintage, metals etc.. It has from most coins as well clear pictures, and it's I think the most used catalog in the world for type and year collectors!!

Walk into a coinstore or a library some day, pick up the book, and take a good look I it, you will be amazed how manny coins there are

Greetings, Carl

Welcome,

As your interests grow, let me suggest the Walter Breen Encyclopedia. This is a mountain of great info. A bit pricey at $125, but worth every cent.

Hi Charles:

Here is a link to a web page that has extensive reviews on coin books intended for beginning collectors:

http://www.us-coin-values-advisor.c...in-book.html

My favorite is "Coin Collecting for Dummies". Its very well written and contains great information.

If you're really interested in commemoratives, then go to this page, where you'll find a review on "Commemorative Coins of the United States (2nd ed.)

http://www.us-coin-values-advisor.c...n-books.html

Perhaps this book will help in your quest to study commemoratives.

Hope this helps!
