Does anyone here keep a photographic record of their collections?

If you do? do you photograph groups or singles with a description and approximate grade and value?

I do. I have pics of better raw coins and all certified coins. Not only do I have the cert numbers in an overall view, I have close-ups
that show all the various scuffs and nicks that are unique to a particular coin. In case of theft, this can be invaluable. I also keep a CD-R of the library off-site for security purposes.

I photographed all of my slabs with the given certification number (obverse). I also have photographed most of my raw semi/key date coins. All the photo's are saved on multiple CD's for easy access. Each coin is photographed individually, detailing the obverse and reverse.

Also, I keep an excel spreadsheet of the coins with all of the important stuff (date, mint mark, date purchased, amount, grade, etc.) that I print to hard copy every quarter (quarterly update). Also, I use Heritage's online "My Collection" software. I like it because it is FREE and it also gives me an up to date value (wholesale and retail) of my coins. Check it out at their website:

Now...I have a letter in my will that explains what I have and what my heirs "should" do upon my departure. I just don't want them to end up like many collections here in Florida. You know the story...old lady walks into a coin store, she tells the owner she knows nothing about coins and in 10 minutes, she walks out with 10 cents on the dollar.

My letter's salutation is, "So you found my coin collection, here's what you should do if you want to keep them or sell them." The instructions are detailed, but light hearted for the person lucky enough to find my collection.

After all, 99% of our coins in our collection will outlive us. Like all collections, we are just temporary holders of our possessions. Enjoy them while you can!

Metalman, very good question! I do have a photo record of most of my coins. My problem was presenting an estimated value to my insurance company. Without a rider they only covered between 1-5K. I then made an inquiry based on the estimated value of my collection and asked what it would cost to insure. Man I'm glad I was sitting down as the rider would have raised my premium by over 1K! Well, a floor mounted fire rated safe and safe deposit box came next. How much, if any insurance does ANA provide? What do you guys do about insurance? I was definatly exposed to a huge loss for many years. Are there affordable plans out there from private companies that you or others have or would reccomend? Thanks, Mike

I have a photograpic record of the coins I consider to be valueable to me! not everyone would agree with a circulated small date 1960 lincoln as being valuble LOL,,

But My collection although it contains around 4500 coins is not what I would consider to be irreplaceably valuble, so I just let the Home owners cover what it will right now, even though they ask for updated value statements on renewal, eventually I figure I will top there coverage and then they will want a rider on the poicy.

Until then I leave security in the hands of the professionals!!

I Photo all the new coins I get but I have a back log of about 8000 of my original collection that I do not seem to be able to find the time for. Next time I travel somewhere fairly safe I think I am going to take a Box of coins with me to try and catch up. The only real way to catch up is to stop buying. Like thats going to happen!!!!!

I'm working on it. I usually only take pics (digital) of individual coins and store 'em on CD's ... the price/value information is in another program.

Hello Everyone,
I also keep a photographic record of my coins, I keep a seperate pic of the certification numbers for the slabs, just in case I would have to ID any of my coins. I also put them on my webpage so I can access them any time.

That's something I really should get around to doing! I do have a rider on my renter's insurance for my collection, they just asked for an estimate of the value, guess it's not a high enough dollar amount to require anything more than that!

I also photograph all the coins purchased, along with some special coins owned by various dealers with whom I deal with. Most are done for "collecting" value, but also used for identification and authentication. I wish that more collectors would do this. Coins come and go in our lives, but a picture can last forever.

If you use excel, you can insert a link from one of the cells to the jpeg image in your coin folder.
