I am pleased on this Nickel find no matter what. However, I am exhausted and on way back home so better picks WILL come promise. I chose this nickel b/c one, it reminds me of the classic War Nickels in the way that it has faded small lettering under large lettering on Reverse like you can find on occasion with the different composition War Nickels. Also, what was intriguing to me, and something I was surprised nobody was catching on to, is the difference in the dome design and size and position of windows on Monticello...I thought at least. Not even the slightest bit an expert on this series so thought maybe someone could chime in. Like I said, better and more picks of obverse and reverse will come to help display other characteristics.

I don't collect nickels - yet, but one day I might.
War Nickels - weren't they made of silver, and had a Huge Mint Mark above the dome of Monticello ? I can't quite tell if there is one there or not.

I, too, am exhausted, Its been a long week !

No this isn't a War Nickel. The mint mark isn't on top like those of that time period. I was just thinking that some of the characteristics on this coin reminded me of those found on the War Series. I have no idea (yet) of this coins composition. Good question nonetheless!

This is the best I can do until I get my lens I ordered. The closest thing I had to compare with the 1951 D Nickel was a 1959 D. I also noted that the 1951 seemed thinner than other nickels but of course it has been circulating for a while so it may be just that. There is something to the left of Monticello across from the mint mark. Does the chin seem different on the 1951 or is that normal? I also put a pic of that small lettering behind normal lettering. Not sure what to think about this one yet. Not a variety plagued series like the coins I usually go after so a nice surprise...hopefully.

Looks like your first coin has been homeless for a time outdoors. If the coin is as red as the first images, that may just be the case.

LOL I know poor Jefferson doesn't deserve such neglect! I am going to post another pick of Mr. Jefferson's chin. It is really bugging me. This lens can't come fast enough

Sorry forgot. The coin actually is a dull grey. I'm not saying it is zinc ( doubt it ) but that is the color it resembles. probably the flash. Either way, it has seen some things that is for sure but it is an intriguing coin for me, for the time being.

Carry it a while in you pocket. It looks like if might look antiqued with a little circulation to give it character.

Should have done a side by side pic. I am not a very patient person when it comes to coins so waiting on camera stuff to come is about as hard as watching paint dry. Here is a starter. Look at the lettering of Monticello on 51' It is shorter that 59. I see this trait on several Letters but not all. Again, not familiar with series so just putting it all out there. On obverse there are differences but don't want to get too picky. The Mintmark on 51 is also smaller than 59. I don't know if this is something to consider? weight of 51' is between 4.9 and 5.0 grams. The Hemmingway forgeries I was told typically weigh more than 5 grams. Not going full steam on this one LOL! Fun coin though!
