Don't worry wolfman-11, I wouldn't bring acids up to my room. Nitrate fumes are especially bad. There seems to be a fume cupboard in the lab, but I don't know if it's working. Or maybe I can just hide it somewhere outside (there's a small forest behind my school and I know well the area) and check back a couple of hours later?
wert, is the CAS for Audacity?

I found a couple cupro nickel coins in this condition. No need to cut them open for a look.

That's great! What year is the nickel from? Some year between 1982 and 1989 right? I'm currently trying to engrave a 1988 nickel, if I find anything interesting under the surface I'll take a photo of it.
I'm not too sure about the dime, though. It looks like a Fe(III) compound to me instead of copper. Could you double check if it's corrosion? I don't think dimes were made with cupronickel either.

The nickel is 1983, the plating is separating. These coins were dug out of a cup holder in an old car. There were probably 12 stuck together in a clump, pennies dimes and quarters. I put the dime into acid to see if it would etch and here is the result. It seems that most of the copper was transfer from another coin, although there is damage to the plating on this one. The black spot would indicate steel. I am quite busy at the shop at present but I will make a rig to remove the plating and let you know what I find.

Thanks a lot, wolfman-11! Update us if you find anything interesting In the meantime maybe you can use some flat piece of metal to try push some of the plating off? Almost forgot to ask, what acid did you use? Sorry wert, I don't think I can use the CAS since Audacity won't work on my laptop.

I slacked off this morning Here are the 3 layers of the dime. The damaged spot rusted right through and you can see rust on the top left. The penny was a zinc, now it is magnetic.

SlurExe97...Here is one more program (FREE) that you might want to play with if you are serious about sound testing coins...It is a Linux program but you Windows users can also download your link..It is a shame because there are many, many, of these FREE software programs in Linux that you could use... TRAVERS DAW...Is an audio recording and editing program which is very well suited to record http://traverso-daw.org/

The dime was never cupro-nickel, it`s steel, plated with nickel, then plated with copper, and finally plated with nickel again. The 1983 nickel is indeed cupro-nickel, an alloy of copper and nickel, it has no plating whatsoever. For the penny you did not transform zinc to nickel.

@DBM you are correct. It is nickel plated. I meant to say magnetic.

wert, I'm using a MacBook Air, so I'm using iOS. Maybe I'll try finding if your programs have an iOS counterpart.
DBM, so the cupro-nickel nickel is solid with no plating whatsoever?
Corroded steel core it looks like? Or is it copper? wolfman-11, I don't understand with the penny. Did you electroplate it with nickel?

SlurExe97 - The core of the dime is steel and that is rust you see at the top. I reverse electroplated the nickel off of the dime and then onto the penny. I have not investigated the 1983 nickel further yet. That is why we must beware when buying stuff on ebay, since a person could easily forge a 2006 no p magnetic penny.
