Picked up this nice 23-88A Machin's Mills halfpenny. It is an R1 but I am very pleased with the eye appeal of this coin. Opinions on grade desired, please.

Very cool. XF? So hard to tell strike from wear. Britannia's facial features are visible on the best strikes of this variety.

I purchased it as VF. Not sure what the high points are but I would guess the wear on Britannia's head keeps this at VF. The strike is quite nice and the planchet pleasing as well.

Thats is a very nice coin, and I think the amount of actual circulation wear is quite limited. The Bowers Encyclopedia discusses grading of pre-federal issues, and notes that they really cannot be graded using standards applied to coinage struck with more advanced equipment. Thus, imho, the wear you see at the head is really due to a weak strike, or maybe, due to the condition of the die used. All in all I would grade this coin at EF.
