The Bowers Encyclopedia discusses grading of pre-federal issues, and notes that they really cannot be graded using standards applied to coinage struck with more advanced equipment. Thus, imho, the wear you see at the head is really due to a weak strike, or maybe, due to the condition of the die used. All in all I would grade this coin at EF. Report this Post to the Staff
