I actually do not collect modern U.S coins - this is one of the very few exceptions. I am having a very hard time grading it - it was bought as Mint State in 1986. The relief seems somewhat flat, even if the coin shows no traces of wear. Is this characteristic of the issue? The color in the first photo is quite close to the coin in-hand. Thank you for your help, as always.

Germanics, you NEVER disappoint when you open the vault my friend.
You could have a weak strike issue causing what you are seeing. I am not sure of the common place of a weak strike on the issue myself but it certainly is possible on any coin at any point in the older days of the minting process.
Its a lovely piece and like all of your very rare and expensive copper, I echo the sentiments of the other poster and recommend you find a way to get your coins into a PCGS holder. They will be conserved and preserved in a way that it is fit for their rarity and scarcity.
Thanks as always for sharing your lovely and quite frankly, awesome collection.

Agreed, Germanicvs has quite the enviable stash of US coins! I'd grade the S-VDB looks as a brown 62-63 MS. Usually the beard/cheek differentiation is more evident in MS Lincolns.

That's a beautiful coin, on the upper end of $1200 I'd say. I'm sure the value has gone up substantially since the '80s, since
edit: didn't go to third grade

Ms64 brown. Some luster, with nice clean fields Hardly a hit on it, especially the obverse great coin!

I would conservatively put this at MS-62 RB. Amazing coin!

If that is how it looks in-hand, I can't see it any higher than 63BN.

GERMANICVS real identity is Eric P. Newman's son. Something tells me he is just getting warmed up. I think it could pull a 63. She is a beauty.
