Looks like a French Liard - probably 17th-century.

The reverse legend appears to read "Liard de France".

The other side has the king's portrait but is very worn...

Try inverting the colors in the photos--sometimes that can help draw out otherwise hidden details.

Yep, Liard de France of Louis XIV. The mintmark is below the word FRANCE, with fleurs-de-lys on three sides, and appears to be an I, for the Limoges mint:

Thanks for your help, I compared this coin to some others and because of the way the letters are spaced and aligns I think this coin was made from 1655-1658. Would I be correct in guessing that date range?
