I saw this in the physics class, and the teacher allowed me to have it!

28-Pennies-In-A-Jar

All the pennies were stuck with masking tape on both sides, one side has "R" and the other has "r". I don't know what it's for, even the physics teacher doesn't know because she said it wasn't her who used it.

The masking tape is really brittle, they literally crumbled when I took them off. Most of the glue is still on the coin.

I didn't have a close look at them yet, but all of them are copper! The newest was a 1995, I think. I did see a pre-1964 one, and a couple of red 70s, 80s and 90s. Even 1 looked like it has a circulation cameo, but that might be because of the dim lighting where I first looked at the coins at. No Georges though. They're now being given a soak in acetone in the science lab, so it's not with me now.

Nice but, this makes me wonder what kind of experiment they were going for?

I was wondering about that too! My biology teacher was in the lab, and he said it might have been used for a "genetics test cross". I find this kind of plausible though, why use 1 penny for each gene when you can just tear up a piece of scratch paper? I guess we'll never know!

It's exactly what it was used for. I would guess "Punnett Squares" and stuff with basic genetics like Gregor Mendel discovered. Awesome, hopefully some good finds.

I guess it might have been. What is it doing in the physics lab? The physics teacher said it had been in her class since she got the class and didn't know where it came from. Probably something that someone's forgotten for years, judging by the condition of the tape. But I guess it just sitting there helps keep some of the 80s nice and red. The 1995's looks like it's seen a lot of circulation, and the newest date is 1996, so the earliest it could have been collected is 1996. Any newer and there's bound to be zincs, unless someone specifically wants copper pennies. But if they are doing Punnett Squares, why do all the pennies need to be copper? Hmm...

You can ignore the above paragraph...

So here's what is in it:
1964
1965
1972
1973
1974
1975
1981 x2
1983 Far bead (possible circulation cameo on reverse)
1984
1985 Blunt x2
1986 x3 (2 red)
1987 x3 (1 or 2 red)
1989 x2
1991 x3 (2 red)
1993 (red?)
1994 x2 (1 red)
1995
1996

Some of the coins have some white/grey/green residue on them, this is because I don't have fresh acetone. I just took them out of the jar (which I put the acetone in) and air dried them. Luckily all the glue came off, and there is NO verdigris under it!

These are some of the nicer pennies I currently own, I wouldn't melt them. Why would a collector want to melt coins anyway?

I'm not that advanced in physics but I definitely could see this jar being used for basic genetics... especially if there were capital and lower case letters I would bet money on it....

Why use pennies and tape over paper... the answer is right there in your hand... it's a whole lot more durable and can withstand the rigors of several high school students using them over and over again.

Nice little find none the less... Today I went to a few of my banks thinking there may be some interesting deposits this time of the month and just before a very long weekend... ended up picking out approx $40 in pennies a bird series $100 and $20.... two '54 $1's a '67 $1 and a $5 and $2 from the 70's.. At the back I could see there was a bag almost full of pennies and I was really trying to charm the teller to let me have it... she said she couldn't give out the pennies anymore... but then end she said... I'll sell you $5 worth.. no arguments here!

Today was a GREAT day... Slur I'm glad you shared your story... as it prompted me to reflect on my day and how blessed I am as well.. Thank you!
Rest in Peace

There was an old science test they did years ago, they would fill the jar to the brim with water and ask "how many pennies would it take to make the water overflow the jar"..Two things...It would take 6 or 7 times that many pennies to overflow the jar, BUT does not explain why the tape...?

Genetics is taught in biology not physics, that's why at first my mind couldn't make the connection of what the pennies were used for.
Oh yeah, durability. I didn't think of that...

Congrats on the old money! Great job charming your teller for pennies It might seem like only $5 but that's 500 coins already.
Getting pennies can be especially hard from banks! First time, I went to the bank branches I had an account in and ALL of them said, "We just sent all of them off to Bank of Canada." (Might it be because it's Monday evening?) I went to another bank, and they had 50 rolls they were willing to sell me! Felt like I shouldn't have done it all at one go, I couldn't fully fold or straighten my arm for the next 3 days because they hurt. My logic basically goes like this:
1 box = 50 rolls = 2500 pennies
Weight = 2500 pennies x 3.24g/penny = 8100g = 8.1 kg
So I thought, "Fine, my bow (which I haven't used in nearly a year) had a draw of 28 pounds, and I was able to pull a 36 once with some effort (though not without leaving one of my forearms blue for the next 2 weeks, because I had drawn it wrong so the string goes for my arm)."
And my brain decided to have my not-draw-bow arm carry the box.
But as I searched through the rolls, getting some really neat finds, I felt that it's all worth the effort!

Ag, if my post can make you and others glad, I'm happy for it. Coming from a family who can afford me an abroad education I often forget the everyday blessings in life, until I look back and realise how lucky I have always been.

wert, I can't think up of anything much except for these being used for test crosses. I saw this jar when we had a pendulum lab, and obviously everyone picked using washers instead because it's much easier to tie.

I agree DaytR. You can see the young queen, then she gets older as they change to newer portraits. They've all got different art styles to them too.

Edit: Oh, and I almost forgot, Happy Good Friday to anyone who is celebrating!
