Hi all, I recently inherited a collection that got me into coin collecting. I have been studying my coins and have found what I believe to be a die crack. Is anyone able to confirm or deny this?

Does this have any effect on the value of the coin?

Regards
Leon

Yes, it's a die crack.
But die cracks are not considered errors, just different.
Generally speaking die cracks are NOT worth a premium.
Some people like them; some don't.

We love die cracks here in Oz. I am a very keen error collector and would buy a coin like this. Obviously error coins are thought of differently in Oz than in the US. To each his/her own eh?

Thanks for your responses. I wonder how long they kept making coins like these at the mint before they realised.

There are some pretty spectacular die cracks on many coins - sometimes I think they used the die until it completely fell apart. Personally, I like them as well.

From what I've seen, die cracks are common on British India coins; the dies were often used until they failed.
I like them when they're dramatic. Here's a nearly shattered die on a India 1/12 Anna from 1908.

That's a nice crack--welcome to CCF!

However, I think your coin has been badly cleaned, it has the tell-tale lines on it.

The only way to say definitively that a coin has not been cleaned is if you have never done so, and if it's been in your possession since it was struck. It does look to have marks that could have been left behind from a good scrubbing - see in the center of the reverse there where are lines? And the difference in coloration between the field and the lettering? These are some of the signs that a coin has been cleaned in the past; nalaberong was just making that observation.

If all those lines are raised, that's a different story - pictures can be deceiving, but from how it looks, they are not.

That's a great die crack, DV!
