I've been wanting to search halves for quite some time now, so yesterday I asked at my local bank. They said they didn't have any CWR's on hand, and they were not allowed to order boxes.
I know there are still plenty of half searchers out there hunting through rolls, so I ask you: where do you get your halves? Should I try a different bank, or is what I experienced widespread?

I have searched through 20 boxes of halves, that my bank ordered for me, over the last couple of months and didn't find a single silver coin. On the other hand, I will stop by a random bank every few days and ask if they have CWR or if any customers have brought any in, and I'd say 60% of the time, I'll find silver/NIFC/Proof coins that way. Consequently, I quit ordering boxes....way too frustrating. I'm not sure where the coin vendor gets their coins that they give to the bank, but they were the most beat up coins I have seen and clearly showed evidence of being taken from coin counting machines where other searchers made their dumps.

I agree, halves are beat to death last couple years.
It's rare to find halves at the counter, because many customers ask for them.
Just keep trying at other banks, you will find one that will order, hopefully w/no fee.

i say try different branches hopefully you have choices, and one saying I hear and use its all about the volume so you will have skunks, is it worth the hunt not if its not your hobby no profit there, but the thrill of a successful hunt and a silver coin in your hand...priceless

I just posted this in another forum. But I would recommend hitting up smaller banks in rural area's. You may get on some tellers nerves, be turned away and just strike out a lot. but if your doing it as a hobby that has a potential of returning some cash value. Then the time and effort is nothing different then going fishing and not catching anything.
I have only been CRH'ing for about a year now and only do about $200 a month. I was finding nothing except a few mint error's and foreign change and almost gave up. I recently moved to a small town with my fiance and decided to hit up a few of the banks in the area. once again nothing big. No boxes of anything. Just asking for customer rolled half's and quarters. Well the first bank we stopped at had 50 dollars in customer rolled halves so I took them and about 20 in quarters. I had planned on opening them when we got home. But I curiosity got the better of me and I sneaked a peak at one of the half rolls. And their was a 69 staring at me with a light rainbow tint. I was thinking this is awesome. My first silver ever. As I started to pour the coins in my hat I started to hear a sound that gave me goosebumps. That silver cling. The entire roll was nothing but 65's through 70. I started screaming out loud. While my fiance is looking at me like I'm nuts. I immediately started looking through the other 4 rolls. Out of a total of 100 coins, 48 of them were 40 percenters.

Ask to speak to a bank manager and tell them you CRH as a hobby. I would be shocked if they wouldn't help you if you have an account at their bank.
