I have two 1905 Barber dimes (no mintmark) where the dates are different. One seems fancy and the other plain. Anyone knows if this is common for the year? Thanks!

I don't think those varieties exist for 1905 Barber dimes. The barber that you call the plain 5 seems to have some doubling within the date, which is probably why the 5 looks different.

It appears most prominent on the 0 when viewed with a loupe. What makes me think that the date style is different on each coin is the seeming difference in distance of the digits from the bust and between each digit.

This may be of help: http://blog.davidlawrence.com/index...alysis-1905/"Varieties: There is a proof with a repunched 5. Haney has a specimen with a slight repunching of the 9 and possibly of the 5. Breen also reports that "irregularities" are found In the 5, from the logotype."

Thank you for that link matthewvincent! It helps. I do believe that the logotype is different on each coin, though apparently there is no premium above common value.

angellionel, These minor differences are of interest only to a specialist. I do specialize in the Barber dimes. That your eye caught the subtle difference is a tribute to your talent for close inspection. No premium, but raises the question of the reason why. Glad to be of help.

Thank you matthewvincent! I appreciate the kind words. I checked out the link on your signature. That's a very nice site you have. I added it to my resources page. The grading Barber coins page is going to be helpful.

They are definitely from different obverse dies, even the date positions are different.

Looks like the tip of the flag of the 5 may have chipped off the logotype punch on the second one.

It's an interesting difference in any case. Quote: Conder101 > Looks like the tip of the flag of the 5 may have chipped off the logotype punch on the second one. It sure does look that way from the photo. I did take a close look at that area with a loupe but the immediate surface of the tip looks smooth and 'normal' and not clipped. Still, it seems a likely scenario. The denticles below the date on both is different too.
