OK - I think I have a 1985 DDO but haven't been able to find the markers just yet. In the subject specimen photo, I see thickening of the date most notably in the tails of the 9 and 5 but also a bulge in the lower circle of the 8. There are a few DDOs to reference at CC, but I haven't found matching markers. Here are a couple of pictures to get started.

You might hang on to it and submit it when they start taking attributions with coppercoins. A close up would be nice of the date area.

Coop - here's a quick two before hitting the hay. Thanks for having a look.

That is a DDO! Nice find. Seeing up close helps a lot more than looking at it far away.

Thanks Coop! I went with your advice - look for thick devices. I think it looks most like the -004 but I can't match the markers. It may be an unidentified variety, but the investigation continues. I can see the splits in the details in the tail of the 9 and the tail and tip of the top of the 5; the 8 has the bulge noticed on 1984 DDOs. So I was pretty sure I had one. I have to admit that since I picked up the hobby again a few months ago, I've had a fine time trying to find varieties. All these varieties passing through folks hands every day. Lots to find!

I really appreciate you taking the time to help me with the last couple of identifications (all of us novice variety hunters appreciate the help and patience). Starting to get the hang of it but always nice to have a good teacher checking the work!

Nice John! Which variety did you identify it as?

I hadn't been checking but a handful of dates and decided to add 1985 into the search routine this past weekend. Glad I did!! Not an overly valuable piece, but I get more from having one in the collection!! Starting to piece the varieties together but leaps and bounds behind many of you at the moment. Not a race for me...enjoying the journey too much to want to finish this any time soon.

DDO # 4. I think I have found around 4 or 5 over the years. It lists at $4.

Thanks John - I'll be watching out for more as I continue to build the varieties collection. $4 isn't bad for a $0.01 investment and the entertainment/enjoyment in looking for and finding a specimen.

Question: are the markers on your specimens readily identifiable? About the only tells I get from my coin are the splits in the digits (can really only see by eye/loupe), the slight sag in the 'U' in trust, and the fine scratches near/around the obverse motto. I can see what might be a remnant of a scratch near the 'U' in UNITED, but nothing else to verify against. My main conviction that it is a -004 is the comparison of the digits in the Date and the sagging 'U' in TRUST.

I could not match all the markers but it's closest to 004.

Thanks John. As Coop suggests, might be something to send into the folks at CC for consideration.
