For some of the "series"/grades of coins I collect, I have found that some dates (non-toned) are surprisingly less abundent and tougher to find than the lists, prices and rarity figures would seem to indicate. Here is my list of "strange toughies"! Anyone else find this anomoly as well?

$10 Indian Eagles: 1914-P in low UNC was harder to locate than I imagined. 14D's are abundent comparatively. Also, a lot of 1915-P's tend to look weird(strange toning look) so finding a "normal" looking one of those is a tad tough as well. I will say that a book I read on these did mention the 14P as more rare than commonly thought. I totally agree now!

5C MS67 Buffalos: 1938-D without major toning seems to be very tough to find. Considering how abundent they are it seems like 99% are toned pretty radically - golds and blues or purples mostly! They mostly have great luster tho compared to all other late buffs.

50C MS66 Late Walkers: 1946-P would seem like a pretty easy year to find a clean MS66 in, by price and rarity figures, but it took me a relatively long time to track down a nice well-struck one at a reasonable cost. Lots of other years/mm's like S's are "rarer", but a non-toned sharp-strike 46 was super hard to locate - without paying way above retail for it at least.

its the toning that makes the TPGs assign a 67 or 68 over a 66. At least from what I can tell. Your luster blooms are typically in MS65/66 and when you hit that awesome color display coupled with stunning luster you're now in 67/68 territory. This might be more for 19th century than 20th century and is a pure logical assumption on my part.

Theres definitely a lot of truth to what ds said. Of course it not the case every time and like he said a lot of the time the toning can be what gave it that last little push to get over the hump.

For tougher dates than indicated any no stars 1838 0 Seated Liberty dime or Half Dime is really hard to find a nice one anywhere close to guide price, 1860s civil war dated S quarters are really hard, 1896 0 anything barber is almost always listed for the price of one or two grades up. Price guides can be very deceptive for how easy something will be to find. Then theres the added problem of if someone else had to spend 6 months to a year or longer looking for it theyre very unlikely to release it back into the wild any time soon.
