First, this forum is great. I've been lurking for a while and now have a question that hopefully I can get a consensus answer on.

Is a coin like this ever worth purchasing? I'm just looking to fill in a few spots in a 20th century type set, and higher grade Barber halves are a bit $$$ for me at this point. Sans damage, I'd guess it would grade EF-40 or so. Full LIBERTY on the obverse, decent feather detail.

I'm not sure what your price range is, but have you visited Harlan Berk? He has quite a few in VF that are pretty nice examples....I think you can find better than what you posted, but I think it depends on how much the seller is asking.

If this is all you're trying to do, and not interested in resale and profit, and if the coin makes you happy ... go for it if reasonably priced. It looks like it was mounted at one time and if the damage is only on the reverse, just display the obverse.

I agree with SeatedNut, the damage is relatively minor and does not distract your attention from the overall look of the coin. I would consider it a good budget minded filler.

As a filler...well, ok, so long as you aren't paying much of a premium over silver bullion price.
