This isn't a variety or anything, but I'm calling her crying. **Grade posted below** Edited by Amazon99 07/30/2007 2:30 pm

Except for the "tear", this coin I think deserves at least an MS-64 grade, maybe a 65. Looks like it's in a PCGS slab; what grade did they assign? I wonder whether they down-graded it due to the mark.

Actually, it's in a SEGS holder, that's why I put it up on here to see whether the grade on the hold was right or not. Jaobler, if you want, I can e-mail you the answer. I'm not ready to post it up yet, because I want to see what everyone else thinks.

64, I think. If I'm judging the photos right, that's a pretty frosty obverse and the mark is way too wide to be other than a frost break - if it were a gouge the coin wouldn't slab.
Maybe even 65. The more I look at the cheek marks compared to the other places which are obviously frost breaks - above and behind the ear - the more I like the coin.

It's not a scratch or anything, it's a frost break.

hmm.... I wish I knew more about how the frost break would effect its grade - still at least an ms-62 but I know that is a low grading

This one is very common in high grades, one of the best year/mints if you want an honest MS66 for your 7070. As a result, it'll see MS65 before an 1884-S would, for instance.

I love the coin, but is it just the distortion from the holder or does the lower curve of the MM look a little funky?

Wow. Well, that just reinforces the "grading from photos is iffy" concept.
