Hey there, I was at my local shop today. Just to see what he had. I am interested in a 1985 double dollar set, and also a 1923 penny. price for the set 25.00 bucks. When I asked for a deal if I buy both he said he could do 60.00. The 23 is a f to vf coin at best. Is this worth it? I am fairly new to collecting, and he knows this from previous discussions we have had. If someone could help me out that would be great, Thanks.

RedRaider has it. I don't know what you heard or what he said but I would be paying $20 for both or if you really wanted it $25.

*****EDIT: I assumed US Penny not Canadian. At $60, you're doing Okay. You could try getting him down to $50 which is around what I'd pay.

Coins and Canada says a 1923 penny in F condition is worth $41. That's why the guy offered you $60. Twenty for the DD set and Forty for the penny.

From a LCS $60 sounds like a fair deal. The penny is a key date. If you really like the coin and DD set, offer him $50.

An unreasonable enough request, let alone without pics.
Check similar sold listings on ebay for price comparison.Keep in mind the LCS does not charge shipping.

I agree. Right now any Canadian key date or "specialty" small cents often fetch above book. I'd even venture to say it's the best selling denomination at the moment.

Thanks guys I'm trying to complete my penny set and stuck on the 20s ones. My trouble is I have read reviews about the shop and people say he is a scam artist he wanted 40 alone for the 23 but in my opinion its to much but I took the double dollar set for 25. think I will start collecting them to I have 1980 the year I was born and 19985 the year my wife was born. Thanks for the help.

$40 is not unreasonable when you figure the VF trend price is $50 in the Canadian Coin News.

It sounds like you're a new customer. Its not unreasonable to ask for deals, but you shouldn't expect to get a 40%+ discount your first time. Offer him some patronage first. Unless the reputation of a dealer is overwhelmingly negative, you should definitely shop there a few times and develop a relationship. Then decide what kind of person they are to deal with.

Bad press from any single source should be taken with a grain of salt.

It really depends if you like the coins. There are a couple of 1920 penny key dates, and they are fairly easy to find.

May I add, it is a question of instinct.
If a dealer makes you feel uncomfortable, walk away.
If you get good vibes, cultivate a relationship.
And if not this deal, perhaps another.
Coin collecting requires more patience than many of us possess.

I didn't ask for a deal until I had bought items twice before this time. He seems nice and personable to me but others have told me he has been very rude to them. He also tried to advise me that no canadian cents are ever going to be worth anything, unless in the 20's and I find that hard to belive as supply will sooner or later make it very hard to even get a penny. In my opinion, everything is worth something to somebody, you just have to find that somebody.
