I noticed this coin on buyuscoins.com Does the PQ label have the same meaning as CAC and is it worth anything extra? (I would post a link but their website is acting up) By the way, I see it used a lot on ebay descriptions. What on earth is PQ? Thanks!

Sorry about the crummy photo. I had to drag the image from the listing on the website, so it's very small.

PQ stands for premium quality and the term has been used for a while to describe coins. It looks like the sticker is from a new company competing with CAC ( PQApproved.com).

Thanks for the link, nolawyer. I don't see success in the future for PQ, but hey, maybe.

PQ is a designation of Premium Quality. Now what is considered Premium Quality is a matter of opinion and heated conjecture, and does not really mean anything. Just to prove my point, who is SCI, what is their reputation, and what characteristics designate "premium quality?"

TypeCoin, just checked the link nolawyer gave me and they have a list of characteristics that point toward "PQ". Never heard of SCI, though.

I don't see much hope for PQapproved either, but, who knows? Maybe now a coin will need to be in a PCGS slab with a CAC sticker (preferably a gold sticker) & and a PQ sticker to be legit :)

I've seen a few of those stickers and figured it was a "basement cac-er" copycat thing to be ignored.
Interesting on the Premium Quality, I've seen it mostly referred to as PRICED QUICK, as in priced low to sell quickly. More gimmicks, sheesh!

This is the brainchild of Barry Stuppler and Don Ketterling. Both are prominent dealers and numismatists - Stuppler is a past President of the ANA and a PNG board member; Ketterling teaches the ANA Advanced Grading of Rare Coins course. Both have decades of professional grading experience. It's my opinion that they're trying to carve an even smaller niche than CAC. The latter intends only to separate the "good for the grade" coins from the dogs; PQ only stickers coins with top-tier eye appeal. Not really sure it's a viable, or necessary, proposition. If I need someone to tell me that my coin has good eye appeal, I probably shouldn't be looking at coins.

Might be useful for blind numismatists who can't judge eye appeal themselves.

...which is why they made the sticker round instead of the CAC bean shape - so you could tell which sticker the slab had by feel. Brilliant.

If this trend continues the TPGs will need to make the slabs bigger to hold all the stickers!

I am waiting for more companies to do the same, so I can start a stickers collection.

Someone needs to start assigning stickers based on the level of toning on a coin. From a pure white sticker to rainbows for only the best toned coins out there.
