Now, as the title says, he's trying to sell me some coins.

He wanted $90 for the whole lot and I picked out some that I would like so I didn't have to waste my money.

So I'm thinking about offering $40 for the following:

1965 SMS Set in plastic holder.
1967 SMS Set in plastic holder.
1968 D Uncirculated Set (Which has a lovely purple Jefferson in there)
And 5 Uncirculated 40% Kennedy half dollars. 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968 D, and 1969 D.

Can I get some insight to see if this is a good deal or not?

Where did the teenager get the coins? From his collection? Or possibly, a raided father's collection? Be careful, I've seen cases when coins where stolen from a father's collection and sold by his children who need some money in their hands.

Matte, this teenager is in his late teens and has been collecting since he was 13, such as I. Now, I have confirmation from his father that these are indeed his coins because they fixed my grandparent's plumbing just a week back. I do understand your point, however.

Good. I just wanted to make sure there wouldn't be problems after the transaction.

5 40% Halves at $2.9149 worth of silver ( (124) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed EDIT: why is the "Measuring the Metal Value of Coins" site name, not link, auto-removed? Google the quotes for the source...) each, $14.5745.

1965 SMS (Ebay, http://www.ebay.com/itm/1965-Specia...51bb6bffe0), $11.94
1967 SMS (Ebay, http://www.ebay.com/itm/1967-SPECIA...258bf87276), $9.95
1968 Mint Set P/D with S cent (Ebay, http://www.ebay.com/itm/1968-P-D-Mi...m338d8fd9e0), $9.28

Total cost, silver + cheapest buy it now's on ebay: $47.7445.

A bid in at $40 is decent, considering you're only getting the D of the '68 mint set...you could always try to get it for a tad bit cheaper (you're not dealing with ebay, you know) and offer $30-35 first, so that you could then counter with $40 if he refuses such an offer, but that's all up to you. Or...you could try to get the sets cheaper on ebay by playing the auctions. Odds are that you'll get lucky, eventually.

Checking with parents is always a good idea when dealing with a minor.
At thirteen you would have trouble selling as well. Long gone are the days
when a high school student could sell at a show.
I bought a 20 dollar gold piece for $35 from a fellow high school student and sold if for $70 a few years later during the first increase of gold bullion prices.
I think that you have the situation well in hand.
PS. Offer $35!

What do you mean Uncirculated? Are these just from change or roll searching? Or just where did he get them.
For the total, I'd still like to see a bit less than $40 but that is a decent, not great, price.

Uncirculated as in MS coins.

My grandmother is offering him 50 for even more coins with the ones I mentioned. A few more 40% Kennedy halves
some V nickels, Buffalos, and 6 or 7 Ike dollars

Auto-removed sites generally fall into two categories: Sites which offer advertising not in keeping with our G-rated environment, or sites which have directly offended CCF by spamming us or our membership. Either way, they've earned it.

$40 is a bit much by my count. I'd be much more happy at $30-$35.

Same as I've been saying. I sort of think your age is why they are in the $40 area.

Why does my age determine anything in this? I looked up average values, and it was around $40, so I was just seeing if it was a good offer to start with, or if I needed to adjust it.
