Hello all,
I started taking photos of my finds to post here on CCF with an inexpensive USB microscope and a stand.

That was SO Cool for a few minutes, then I didn't like the lighting.

So I got 2 of the Jansco lights that people were talking about in the forums here. I'm still playing with them and haven't found the 'right' way to use them yet.

So I broke down and used some $$ that had been given to me for a special occasion and bought LightRoom 5.

I've come to the conclusion that this is going to be quite a learning process.

I also got a book to try to help me out by Scott Kelly and a dvd by Laura Shoe as well to help me out a bit but WOW!

12 1/2 hours of video and a 550 page book to go through. Not that I don't have time but I never expected it to be such an involved process.

I Love what I'm learning but I hope I haven't wasted my money.

I am considering trying to find a collage course that will help for photography as well. I just have no idea where to start.

I REALLY like what I'm starting to learn and my interest started here on CCF. I am quite sure that interest will carry over to shooting more then just coins.

Now I think I'm going to have to scrimp and save to try and get a decent DSLR, but with my budget this will most likely take a while.

I'll be reading more on the forums here of course, but was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction for learning without me having a 'disposable' income. ( means I'm basically poor and on a 'fixed' income ). Disabled Vet.

I hope this is coming across correctly.

There, now I think I've gone and confused myself even.

ANY comments, opinions, advice would be VERY helpful. ( hopefully I haven't confused everyone else. )

Thanks guy's.

Don't just focus on a DSLR. Look at some of the mirrorless system cameras that are available. There's a decent range and they can be more versatile than a DSLR. Mirrorless system cameras can do all that a DSLR can and because they don't have a mirror box you can mount lenses from other makes on them. This means you can use old manual focus macro lenses ( with simple cheap adapters( they don't have image destroying speed booster lenses inside them) Your choices are MIcro four thirds cameras( Olympus,Panasonic and Fuji) and APSC sized mirrorless such as the Sony NEX series. You should be able to pick a decent camera up second hand from less than US$100 - $200. The necessary adapters cost from under US$10.00 to US$100. Manual focus macro lenses can be found for around US$ 60.00.

Prices on Canon Rebel XS / 1000D have come down quite a bit. Last couple I bought went for <$125, but you should expect to pay ~$150 or so unless you're willing to wait a while for a deal. $150 is still quite a bargain for a full DSLR with EFSC and excellent tethering software.

I have been looking around on newegg and Amazon and I know they are not cheap, to me any way.

Is it 'Safe ' to buy a used one and if so, do you have any recommendations as to where?

Thank you all.

Yes, it's generally safe to buy one used - few use them to anywhere near the limits of their lifetimes which is well over 50,000 exposures. And I just posted a very good deal on a 1000D here in the Photography Forum. I'd have jumped on it instantly, even as a spare, had this been a point in my life when it made sense. But I'm moving in a week and a half and space/money restrictions forbid.

If you decide to go that way, though, make yourself familiar with the processes discussed in the "$400 camera" thread, and see if you think that's for you before you leap.
