HI Guys,
Recently my brother and came into procession of a large bag of British half pennies. We have no idea what to look out for in regards to rarity and collect ability. We would also like some tips on cleaning them, which is going to be a monster task as there must be a few hundred of them. Any advice and suggestions would be greatly received.

, don't clean them, the only thing cleaning can do is remove the small amount of value they still have. Being copper they don't have much of a base value but if there are key dates in them or they are old and in good shape then they might be worth a little bit. What ages are you looking at? mostly Elizabeth II or back to Queen Vic? or older? or at least dates

thanks for the quick reply guys. My brother counted them this morning and we have 1160 coins. They range in dates but I haven't had a look at them just yet I think we're going to sit down at the weekend look through them so I will know more then. Is there any dates in particular that are special? what about markings and engravings?

The older, the better. Sort them by decade if you want.

I was just sorting through 60 or so British Large Pennies last night. I prefer to sort by Monarch, then by Date. If you google "British Half Penny values" you'll get a couple of sites that will give you an idea of grade and value. Good Luck!!

You might notice the busts face the opposite direction from one ruler to the next. Sort by Monarch, then by decade. I can't wait till this weekend, Good Luck with it

Any in the 1700's? If so some could be worth $1,000 each ... IF COUNTERFEIT.

Hello and welcome. Quote: We would also like some tips on cleaning them, which is going to be a monster task... Nobody else has said it yet, so I'm going to say it... PLEASE DON'T CLEAN THEM. Unless you really, actually know what you're doing the coins really, actually do need cleaning, trying to clean coins is an excellent way to destroy whatever value they might have had to a collector. At the very least, post pictures of coins you think might need cleaning, and we'll tell you if we think they really need to be cleaned or not.

Quote: the coins really, actually do need cleaning, and to avoid any confusion, I'm quite positive he meant "do NOT need cleaning".

HI Guys,
Just a bit of an update, my brother has finally got around to sorting the coins. He's said that they range from 1899 being the earliest all the way up to the 60's. There is 1 or 2 years missing in-between that but not a lot. So is there any particular year to have a look for? what about monarch as ASLAN TVorlon said? Again any advise would be great. Thanks

I would be surprised if they are worth anymore than scrap. Look on ebay when they don't sell.Unless Unc (mint condition)they are worth diddly.
