I was wonder what an approximate value for this 1797 S-120b large cent would be worth before and after the damage. You can see yhe grips on the edge in the photos included, so I don't have one for the edge itself. My research gives me conflicting data and unreliable results. I am completely curious as this is probably going in my type set.

At least Fine, with an argument for VF details. The damage is extensive, so it's tough to estimate pricing as it'd be dependent on the opinion of the buyer. $300-ish, maybe more, as-is, in the $400 neighborhood with less-intensive damage.

The sky's the limit for a "clean" example - a PCGS F15 just hammered for $1645 at Heritage, and it had scratches on the reverse although a very nice planchet.

Your looking at more of a strike issue vs. wear.
It's VF. 25 would be my call.
Too bad about the damage. Still retains nice eye-appeal.

What is the cause for the damage around the face? Just trying to learn.
