Are there any countries that still mint silver coins for everyday use (not counting commemorative coins and proofs)?

If not, which was the most recent?

I don't think we've had any in the UK since around 1946 or something!

america still have real silver circulating coins I think.

due to the silver content newly created coins would have to
have a large legal tender value such as the new £20 coin
which technically speaking can be used at the post office
to it's full face value.

No circulating US coins have contained any silver since 1969, and that was half dollars which contained 40% silver and really didn't circulate much. So for all intents and purposes, the end of US circulating coinage in silver was 1964. We currently have silver commemoratives, bullion, and proof coins which occasionally find their way into circulation.

I think Mexico's bimetallic coins were probably the last silver issue intended for circulation, but several Euro countries have issued high face value (5 euro and above) coins that have been legal tender within that country. I've managed to get quite a few of the French silver 10-euro coins for face value from post offices - they had coins in 2010, 2011 and 2012 commemorating different aspects (heraldry, monuments and famous people) from each region of France.

Kennedy halves were minted in 40% silver 1965~1970. No circulating US coin was minted in silver since 1971.

The Canadian coins ended in the 1968(80% silver).

with NumisRob.

Silver was phased out of world coinage by the 1970s; I think Germany was the last to replace their circulating "flagship" coin, the 5 mark, with cupronickel in 1975.

The Mexican silver lobby persuaded the Mexican government to re-introduce silver circulating coinage, in bimetallic form, in 1992 for the 10 and 20 new peso coins. Unfortunately, the Mexican economy was still doing poorly at that stage and once the coin's face value fell below melt, people starting punching out the silver cores. The experiment ended in 1995.

Many countries issue silver coins "for face value"; France and Germany have done so for quite some time; Canada started the latest trend when it first issued their "$20 for $20" programme in 2010.

The Mexican coins circulated as well, though. I have quite a few heavily worn examples, it's uncommon to find uncirculated bimetallic silver coins.

I'm aware of the 1970 Kennedy half (I have one), but I gave 1969 as the end date for circulation since the '70s were only available in the mint & proof sets and not released for circulation.
