Am I right in thinking anytime the doubling is lighter in color it is Machine Doubling? Thanks

That is Die Deterioration. It is on the right side of the date and the left side of the LIBERTY. It always shows on the devices toward the rim.

I personally think that a zinc coin doesn't have the tensile strength a copper coin had/has, and when the dies hammer these zinc coins, the result is what happened to the coin above. You will see a lot of the same impressions on zincs. Any harder a hit and it will split the covering and make the coin look nasty. A doubled die will typically be a bit wider, typically at the same height or close to it.

Some of the DDO's are really minor on Coppercoins, to the point of confusing the collectors. I typically stick with the copper years and the tried and true DDO's. The 1987 year has a few minor DDO's listed, but, unfortunately this is not one of them. It's VERY important to look for the markers (indicators) when you suspect a DDO is in hand. The markers, PUP's or indicators - whatever you wish to call them - are not always going to be there. I tell myself, if I have to contemplate whether its a RPM, DDO or DDR for more than a few minutes, my confidence in that coin being a bell ringer is lowered significantly.

I'm up writing up a nice long article about RPM, DDO's and DDR on my website and its almost done. I'll post a link in my signature when its completed.

Gary if that were the case, all cents would look that way. But it occurs when the die after making many strikes starts to show die wear in that area and toward the rim on all areas. Because the coin is shiny, it stands out more than on a brown coin.
