After seeing the picture of the interesting 5p NumisRob picked up on the road https://goccf.com/t/132633&whichpage=20 I thought about it and as we know if you think about something you either dream about it or it happens !  In my case I picked up a 5p on the road that had been driven over a bit yesterday.   Given that the one I picked up is cupronickel its fascinating to compare how it fared compared to the one Rob picked up (which is the newer variety of 5p) ......  Since some people like roadkills , I figured I prefer a road coin myself  so I dug into my piggybank  and uncovered some recent road coins ....   Interestingly enough, the two below are newer plated steel 5p coins ...   I would be interested in hearing about your tales of where you encountered roadcoins or better still put up some pictures as road coins are very fascinating !  Edited by DaytR

If you don't mind an American road coin, this was picked up by my grandfather when I was ten. 1902 Barber dime, but what makes it all the more extraordinary is that he found it in the road in front of a meetinghouse of the Religious Society of Friends. Pennsylvania Quakers were not ones to allow ten cents to escape their grasp. As a Quaker teacher of mine once put it, "The Quakers came to the New World to do good... and they did real good!" Late yesterday afternoon after a somewhat uneventful day I picked up a nice road £1 (on the left) by some upmarket apartment complexes The 1983 pound coin is one I picked up last year ......  it seems £1 coins fare better off on the road, they are quite tough sturdy beauties it will be shame to see them go... Here's a Canadian one to add to the mix! Found my first road coin that I actually picked up from the road, a 2013 dime from near a bus stop  It's pretty nasty. |

I think it's just a lot of grime, but I haven't washed it off yet. It's still wrapped up in the bus ticket I used to pick it up with. It doesn't look like it's been there for too long though, since it's not that badly scratched up. Don't know yet if there's rust underneath, but it's possible since I've seen 2008 quarters from rolls rusting to the point where it actually bulges at that spot  |

"Side B" is the obverse, fuzzy; you can still make out Roosevelt's profile, which I imagine you know, since you have him exactly right side up!

I found a 1 euro on hol in France all battered up wish I still had it, gave it to my cousin because he wanted to start coin collecting ;)

I found this 1971 British penny on the road outside my workplace a couple of days ago. Poor thing - to have survived in circulation for 43 years and then to have this happen to you...   Edited by NumisRob

Funnily enough, today I found a 1996 2p lying on the road in almost exactly the same place that I found the 1971 1p. But the 2p coin had only recently been dropped and didn't show any obvious signs of damage!

....of all pennies I would wish not to have seen this happen to ,the 1971 penny would be top of the list , at least the obvese is not completely ruined ...good thing you rescued it
