This 1857 Flying Eagle cent sold for $342 on ebay. It looks like a nice AU coin, but that price seems high for the date and grade. I don't see any doubling on it. Was there a bidding war? Is the coin better than AU? Am I missing something?

Opinions are most welcome.

Interesting. Looks better than an AU .

Looks like a stupid "bidding war" between 2 bidders [h***g(2079) and u***u(428)].

This is a rare variety. The reverse is clashed with a Seated quarter. Very rare in this grade, especially problem free.

I'd heard of the clashed die with the Seated Half, but not with a Seated quarter.

Thanks for answering that question.

Great details on that one--but I don't see much luster.
In any case, it's the variety that RedRaider noted--that explains everything, more like a $600 coin.

If I had seen this auction, I probably would have bid higher than what it sold for. This would end up being one of the finest 10 examples known I'm guessing.
