Hi this is my second post today, one above with the gold Indian head. Same question is this coin authentic? I bought about 18 coins from Europe 2 of which are American and the rest very old French,Russian,Swiss and Polish coins. I'm not an expert in American coinage but this coin and my other gold coin looks very suspicious to me. *** Edited by Staff - Removed redundant huge images. ***Edited by Matt007pl 05/01/2014 7:48 pm

Now I know what "Vampire" means. I've seen the phrase, but didn't know what it referred to.

The "vampire" refers to a specific Chinese die transfer copy that is easily discernible from the two contact marks on the neck. The marks are not quite clear in this picture although visible on a draped bust dollar in this image from another topic http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...ront_opt.jpg

The real question becomes then, is it made of silver? If so even if its fake it would still have some bullion melt value

I had one of these counterfeit "vampire" 1795's in the past. When I put some Hydrogen Peroxide on the coin, it turned black indicating the coin was merely plated with silver with a base metal underneath. These counterfeits were made in China and are quite accurate (even the edge wording and symbols are correct). The biggest flaw in these fakes are the pimply and dull surfaces.
