what is wrong with this coin it has holes around the edge on both sides and no damage on the field

That's zinc rot; even though it is only on the edges, it will eventually eat up the entire coin. This happens a lot to modern zincs.

My advise is to spend that baby while it still resembles a cent

My last bag of cents had probably 20 zincolns that resembled the Deathstar after it had been half blown up. May the 4th be with you.

If the plating gets a split, air gets in followed with the dreaded zinc rot. spend it quickly!

I got a box from a coastal town in California while on vacation. Maybe the salt air makes it worse, but the amount of zinc rotted coins seemed a lot greater than I usually get. And the rot was greater amounts on the coins.
