1964-D Nickel Die Crack - Coin Community Forum

JoshHellcat Valued Member United States 139 Posts	Posted 05/04/2014 12:19 am Time for my daily is-this-an-error thread. Haha. You guys are awesome and I learn more and more everyday. This one looks like a legit die crack, right through the mintmark. It looks like it goes from the edge, through the D mintmark, to the A and back to the edge. Kenton Valued Member United States 78 Posts	Posted 05/04/2014 12:41 am I'm not sure about nickles, but die small die cracks in cents and half dollars are pretty common. I know when I search halves, many of the 1990's have a crack under JFK's bust. Unless the crack is really big, gets a lot of publicity (like a speared buffalo), or is in an unusual spot, die cracks are usually not worth too much. But I personally like to keep all the cool die cracks I find in a tube, even if they aren't worth that much. Report this Post to the Staff
Matteproof Pillar of the Community Korea, Republic Of 1881 Posts	Posted 05/04/2014 01:07 am The 1964 nickel mintage is among the HIGHEST mintage figures of Jeffersons. The dies were overused to the point that there was practically no detail left in the Monticello/ Jefferson's bust (which makes 1964s with a great strike hard to find). I'd say that dies with cracks struck many, many coins before they eventually shattered. No real premium there. But die cracks are always fun little things to look for on coins.
