can anyone tell me anything about it, it was found in a vending machine in 1971 it is perfectly struck but very slightly thinner and smaller than a normal 2p, a newspaper at the time ran a story about a man who had found one and said it was very rare one of only 8 that escaped from The Royal Mint since then I know a couple more that came to light, I wrote to The Royal Mint and they said go to a coin dealer and were not much help

Hi raredancer

I am extremely fascinated by the 1971 two pence you are describing and so far I have seen and heard of 2 before reading about your find .....

I had wondered about how many made it into circulation, thanks for the info

Questions
Do you have a picture of the coin in question ? There is someone who has currently put one up on ebay for steep sum of money .....is that you by any chance?

In your profile settings , could you set it to allow you to be e-mailed by other members so that I can send you an e-mail....

I am amazed that yours was struck in nickel ...the ones I have been trying to track and uncover information on were bronze ones.......

Based on everything so far I guess error 1971 2 pences which are thinner than normal arent as well known an error as other decimal coin errors hence the dearth of information that is available .......so for what its worth -you have a real gem in your hands an error coin so rare not many even many know of its existence

A very useful avenue to try is the Royal Mint Museum , with the museum you can send them the coin and they will look at it and give you an answer as well as send you back your coin so its definitely worth a try ...
