Folks, I got this coin in my change earlier in the July 2013 from a teahouse in New Town, Edinburgh. Unlike Kena's example discussed before, this coin looks legit to my eye, the obverse and reverse match, the edge lettering and milling looks like mint-produced. It is heavily circulated, though, I am still unsure if it is the real 1998 pound coin, it probably have escaped from a cardboard mint set. Any comments?

that's a tricky one - I have seen fakes dated 1998 (usually with the wrong reverse) but the edge lettering looks too good on this one.

Were the letters stamped into the edge before of after the milling was applied?
Genuine Royal Mint £1 coins are always milled after the letters are applied, but fakes are usually the other way around.

That's a detail from the edge lettering, I am not a pro on those, but it seemed to me like the other way around, due to the slight curves of milling on the edge of the letters. If it is a fake, it must be a very, very good one.

It looks OK to me - the rather weak obverse lettering is typical of coins from BU sets.

Strangely, I've had two 1998 £1 coins in change, both of which I think are genuine.

I think it's unlikely a forger would date fake £1 coins 1998, as they would be more likely to make dies using coins from circulation, and only a few 1998 £1 coins would ever have circulated as this was a NIFC issue.

Thanks NumisRob and andyg, is it possible NumisRob that you can post pictures of your 1998 1 Pound coins, I'd really like to compare them with the ones I do have.
About weak lettering, why do you think UK RM sets have weak lettering, specially on pound coins?
I find Royal Shield weak lettering coins in circulation all the time in teh UK, and rarely keep those, but never seen a pre-2008 one before. Any comments?

Here's one of the best fake 1998's I've found - there have been others, but I've not kept them.

This one too - is a completely new die rather than copied from an original,

andyg, the royal shield fake £1 coin is a very interesting one. 'I tend to keep interesting fakes too, however financially it had begun to be an expensive habit.
What is your comment about the edge lettering of my 1998 £1?

Thats a very coin you found molydeii It certainly looks genuine so it must be a real thing.

Regarding weak lettering in shield circulating coins I have also come across quite a few in recent times , since most shield coins are now mostly composed of steel - from what I have been told steel wears out dies more than softer metals used in previous coins this might be why ....

The composition for £1 coins is still Nickel-Brass, the only change (according to the mint) has been the 5p and 10p now in steel.

Still undecided about the pound coin at the start of this thread - It may well be genuine. The milling does seem to have been applied before the letters though, and I've not seen a genuine coin where this happens - however I've never checked any set coins to see if they are the same as the circs.

This is the 1998 £1 coin I found in change ages ago and kept. The other was visually identical and I passed it on to a fellow collector!

Weight and colour are as per a genuine coin.

Hi DaytR

I'll have to check that edge again...

I took some photos of the £1 coin in my 1998 Royal Mint BU set for comparison:

Numisrob - I would say from the pictures that your coins are genuine, I think molydeii's probably is too, even though it is a weak strike.

Comparing the one pound from the BU set and the one you got in the change , the beads on the obverse seem to have more spacing on the pound you got in change ......I guess its probably because a different camera was used for the BU pound coin .

The detail on the pound coin you got in change is too good to be a fake ....its genuine and whats nice about it is that it probably was in circulation for a short while as it has very few scratches .

I live in the U.S. and am not that familiar with modern British/UK coinage.

Is the 1998 a rare issue or one noted for counterfeits?
