I think what I see on this coin is not as far fetched as the "Graffiti or Morgan initials" post I wrote a few days ago. Am I seeing a "near date" and a "high O"--also possibly a slanted date? Your opinion is welcome. Thanks.

I see a slanted date and high "O" which I think makes it a VAM-7.

I end up at VAM21 by process of elimination. The date is set at 2 denticles and the mint mark is centered (not as high as the VAM13 plate coin)

I'm very new to this game, can you tell me why it wouldn't be a VAM 13? "1890-O VAM-13 Near Date, High O Discovered by Martin Field, July 1979.
13 III2 6 - C3b (Near Date, High O) (181) I-2 R-3 Obverse III2 6 - Date set further left than normal."
From a layman's perspective, it seems to make sense. Thanks.

He *did* tell you why - the mint mark isn't in the right location. Many VAMs have remarkably similar verbal descriptions, and must be studied by eye to differentiate.

You're right, he did. I was reading kind of fast and trying to do two things at once--didn't quite sink in even tho. the words were right in front of my nose. You guys have good eyes! I guess it takes a while to recognize the subtleties of VAM's. Below is a photo of my coin and a VAM 13 coins. Good Call.

Quote:I guess it takes a while to recognize the subtleties of VAM's. Yes, very much so. But now that you know the level of eyeball calibration required, you'll be a more effective VAMmer in the future.

On the full obverse photo, it appears the coin has gouges similar to VAM-10. Could you post close up photo between 90 in date and first right star?

Why do I see things that aren't there, and don't see things are? Another good call. I'm glad I found this forum. Thanks.
