What happened to this coin? The letters look like they "melt" as they go to the edges. The CEN in Cents also look "melted". The die looks very old, is there a connection?

Best guessing again, heavy circulation coupled with die polishing or wear and possible Struck Through Grease. But seeing the flow lines and lettering tapering off towards the rim may also be due to a weak strike. Now that covered some of the bases, Better wait for someone who actually knows narrow it down.

The nickel is a similar thickness to other nickels. If it was a weak strike, wouldn't it be a little thicker?

Your coin is a late die state(lds)to a very late die state(vsdl), the dies are deteriorating and losing detail the letters start flowing/melting towards the edge because of the metal flow towards the rim.
Not much value from what I've read but I'd personally keep it

So this die wouldn't have lasted much longer would it?
