86,640,000 2009 nickels were minted. This is not a small number, and I find them quite frequently at work even though I don't search them out. I stick them back as potential trade fodder. Are they really worth more than face value? I have about a dozen that I'd be happy to trade for something more my speed like anything pre-1960 including wheat pennies. I HATE the forward facing Jefferson nickels (could they possibly have come up with a less flattering picture of ol' Tom?) and would not miss them if I got something better than them. They're all circulated, which doesn't help their value.

The 2009 nickels are rare due to an artificial shortage caused by hoarders. They apparently circulate in some areas, but the overwhelmingly vast majority are still BU and sitting in people's closets until they sell on ebay. Roll searchers keep 2009 nickels because they are very hard to find in circulation across most of the country. I wouldn't think a circulated '09 would be worth more than face value, except to someone who needs it for an album hole.

They might someday reach circulation when the wannabe ebay barons give up trying to sell them for $8/roll and cash their 10 boxes in at the bank.

Numbers are relative - when compared to the nickels I have in my house, that's a massive number. Relative to the number of nickels produced in modern years, the number (exacerbated by the number of folks who stocked them away in 2009) is significantly lower than it should be.

Having them to trade is not a bad idea, especially if they are in 'lightly' circulated condition. As another member commented to me recently, the 2009s he's plucked from circulation aren't in the best condition. I have to agree. That said, I did find a couple AU specimens for the album. But always looking to upgrade during CRH events.

I collected a couple tubes of the nicest ones while CRH but now I just throw them in the return pile. Some day people will dump/sell these and they'll be much easier to find.

I have found 8 silver nickels and 4 2009 ones. so I keep them like all the 2009 coins I find just because of scarcity, and if for some reason I ever have a need to trade then I have something someone might need.
