Something got into my mind (don't know why) but I have decided to save all these modern coins that I can pull out of circulation: Eisenhower dollars Susan B Anthony dollars 2009 coinage Early Sacajewa dollars Any comments?

i had so many 2000 SACs I traded some out for NIFCs and the newer Native American ones and SBAs. anything not currently in circulation that I like I will keep. If I ever find Ikes I will keep them, but only ebay has ever given me any. Already keeping all the 2009s I find just because I only have a few of each dime and nickel, but dump the quarters back and still looking for one of the D cents to finish a folder.

I agree with the 2009 coinage one and I think the others might be a little hard to get, are you still looking out for wheat cents and War Nickels and silver and all that kind of stuff though?

I hoard any and all Ikes I find, partially because they remind me of my youth and partially because I know they are worth at least $1.25-1.50 each on ebay if I ever needed to sell them. I also grab any SBAs I find, but those I give to my 9-year-old son for allowance, report card rewards, etc., and he spends them. Basically what my dad did to me when I was my son's age, except with Ikes instead of SBAs. Many years later I regret spending all the Ikes my dad gave me, and I wonder whether my son will regret spending the SBAs 30-40 years down the road. If so, it will give him something to enjoy looking for the way I enjoy looking for Ikes. I have no interest in Sacagawea dollars, early or otherwise, and have no idea why anybody would save 2009 coinage (except, perhaps, for the special Lincoln cents that were produced for that year only).

It all comes down to saving what you want. If you like them or want to save them do it. Chances are it will take a long time before any of them except for maybe MS coins to have any real value. I save everything you mention plus I hold on to any Kennedy halves and pres dollars as well. I save them mostly to just save a little extra money that's not in bill form becuase it's more fun to have coins then bills.

I would save the Ikes you come across, but you will easily bankrupt yourself if you decide to hoard all circulated '79/80 SBA dollars and '00/01 Sac dollars. They don't circulate, but they can be had on demand in just about any quantity desired. Personally I would keep: Any Ike dollars SBA dollars in BU or with full talons; all NIFC (1981 and proofs) Sac dollars in MS 62 or better (no tarnishing, no contact marks); all 2002-2008 2009 - BU LP1 (Cabin), LP2 (Log Splitter), LP3 (Prof. Life), all LP4 (Capitol) - All nickels - All dimes XF or better - All quarters in AU or better The biggest problem with modern issues is that their value tends to spike up to a maximum before either falling back down or staying put for decades. As a good example, a few lucky markets got the 2009 cents by the box. Back in mid '09, a box of cabin cents would sell for $250-300 on ebay. It will still sell for $50, but peak value happened 5 years ago. And, like the Wheat penny, any increase in value that the SBA/Sac dollar sees will be dwarfed by inflation.

I have been sticking back 2009 nickels for trade fodder. I don't like the obverse and I doubt they'll ever be worth anything. Another SBA you might be on the lookout for is the 1979 wide rim variety.

There are plenty of modern errors and varieties to collect, but with a few exceptions, few seem valuable enough to justify taking the time to look for. Typically I keep coins based on age, known rarity, and/or eye appeal, and then check the coins I've pulled for errors or varieties. Also, is the '79 wide rim SBA even worth more than face? I've found a few in circulation, but I read somewhere that they're a good 20-30% of all SBA dollars that year...doesn't seem enough to warrant a premium for circulated examples.
