I got some coins from the bank today to search through and found this 50 cent with a crack in it. Can anyone tell me what could have caused this?

I agree with Matteproof that it is a planchet flaw, I have very similar ones for 1971 and 1975 and a couple of others not sure what years without digging them up. [same era though]

Brett, I think the right Terminology for these
Error Coin's is Called ( Lamination Cracks/Flaw's ).
These occur "after" the Minting Process due to the
Metal Impurity's within the Planchet/Blank & it
take's time to Develop into these Varity's.
I have quite a few of these guy's in all Denomination's.
Nice Start to your career.
