I'm posting this on the main modern forum as well because I want as many opinions as possible in as short a time as possible (auction ends in an hour and a half)

What are your thoughts on this 1918 wheatie? I've been through the pics a hundred times and I'm seeing a pretty high grade piece here. I'd say a 65 at least. I feel like his lighting is a little overexposed and it's hiding either a red coin or a red brown coin which has some pretty wild swings on it's value.

Thoughts? Thanks all!

Russ

Although I am no expert, I will offer my Two Cents:
There's something that I don't like about the surfaces. It looks similar to the "altered surfaces" Lincolns I've come across. The surface doesn't have the luster that I'd be expecting from a RD Wheatie.......way too bright with little marks all over the surface.
The problems with the rims also raise my doubt in authenticity......but the details look all good; the details in the bust and the beard, and accurate letters, etc.
That's just about it of what I can say about this one.

The coin looks cleaned or dipped.

It does appear high grade, but notice how I said it appears. I tend to think that the seller is no fool; if he had an idea that he could make some big bucks by having it certified, he would be selling it in a slab right now. What worries me the most is the over-exposure; like you said, it could be RB, and those are not as sought after as RD coins. The lighting could also be an attempt to hide a dip or a cleaning, as others have noted.

I personally would not take a chance on this one; I like to examine coins in person.

Based on the photos of some of the other Lincoln cents the seller has for sale, I would pass.

Looks like a 64 or so coin with over-exposed pictures. Personally, I'd be more in the $50-60 range.

Thanks so much for all your thoughts guys. I passed on it. The lighting was just too overexposed, hard and potentially hiding too much... maybe making it look too awesome. Love this community because of these opportunities to ask questions and learn! The search continues!

No kidding, I just looked at their other Lincolns - all of them were cleaned/polished.
