What does everyone think of the Lost Ships in Canadian Water: RMS Empress of Ireland?

What-Does-Everyone-Think-Of-The-Lost-Ships-In-Canadian-Water

I like it but not too keen that its plated copper. Though this allowed them to created a big coin for the price.

The theme itself might be interesting for the collectors.
But coin itself - just a painted piece, like many similar editions does not requires special craftsmanship (Imo).
Well...it also costs accordingly.

I mean:
every time when I see painted coin surface, I think, that this way RCM (or any other mint) can create any coin or series, without special effort.

I was looking forward to this coin based on how well the design on the 2012 silver-plated 50-cent Titanic coin was executed. It featured an effective combination of engraved artwork and colour enhancements.

When I saw the pictures of the Empress coin I was disappointed - it's basically a flat coloured image painted on the coin with little artistic engraving to be seen. I did not purchase one.

The pure silver version of the RMS Empress of Ireland is quite hauntingly impressive. Its as if you are standing on the shoreline of Rimouski that dreadful fog-filled night about to witness the unfathomable, and you can't look away.

If the RMS Titanic was coin worthy back in 2012, then certainly this nautical disaster on the St. Lawrence has to make the grade and in my humble opinion, RCM with the help of the artist does it justice, undeniably.

I will go further and declare; its the best offering of the May batch by far, and one of the best for 2014 thus far for both artistic merit and Canadian historical relevance.

And for the low mintage minded...you gotta be pleased.

I like very much the coin, but I'm not interested on these kind of themes.

I bought one, the design is awesome! The low mintage was a big selling feature as well.

Also, if anyone is interested in buying the silver plated version of the coin, Canada Post has a cool collectors set that has the coin as well as a whole bunch of other goodies.

@CoinCanuck:

Thanks for posting a link.
Yes, the set is awesome for collector.
Actually they (CP) here just "makes a money" on this. I afraid, that they will issue the similar for all 3 coins, when better will be to have one single set for all.

But...what is the "design" here? I suppose you refer to the 50c coin, right? It looks like the sticker with the ship image. Every one has different opinion.

There's always returns on ebay, if a person files a not as described case. ebay doesn't pay attention to disclaimers. However, there's the cost of paying for return postage.

I saw it, thought about it, thought about it some more..and by the time I decided I wanted to get one, sold out at the mint. *facepalm*. Debating whether I should pick one up elsewhere or not. Curious to see what the other ships in the series will be and how they will look.
