I have asked this before but because of my bad pics it can't be figured out if it's a specimen or not.

Is-My-Toonie-A-Specimen?

Is-My-Toonie-A-Specimen?

Side by side with a regular but very nice 1996 toonie. The possible specimen is the one on the bottom. Very nice and very shiny and no tarnish/toning.

Is-My-Toonie-A-Specimen? Is-My-Toonie-A-Specimen?

Edit: Didn't realise I put both pics of the reverse, sorry.

I don't think it is a Specimen...and 1996 is very common...I see what yu mean by looks different than the top one-toneing differently or whatever...Does anyone know the stamp below forward paw?

Thanks persistnt. How do you actually tell if it's a specimen or not? I just know specimen has a lined finish.
And the fact that this toonie looks different than the rest that it sort of "glows" because it's so shiny.
Also something I don't see in the other toonies. When you look at it from above, the bear looks lighter than the other relief. When you look from an angle, the bear looks darker.

Here it is beside a 2011, which is somewhat nicer than that 1996.

Sorry persistent, I don't get it. What do you mean "the field is opposite the design relief"?

I think specimen coins look like they've never been touched.

Not a specimen strike. SP strikes of this type have vertical lined backgrounds

A 25c or 50c canadian is better to look at,to tell if SP or circ,,say 2009 to now..So say a 2010 25c piece look at a regular and then look at Specimen of same or similar...Now yu may see what I mean by opposite or backwards fields,,,etc...

All older toonies have a bit of a lined finish (it really threw me off the first few times). So far, I haven't found any real specimen toonies, but I did find an impaired proof-like.

Thanks, all. I guess it is the lined background on the toonies that threw me off too.

Specimens look very different the ones from before 2009 and after 2010. The 2010 ones look like the designer went overboard with the lines.

By the way, is finding a 2003W loonie in circulation mean that it's an impaired proof-like?

So not all coins that were pulled from sets called impaired proof-like if entered into circulation?

I have a test token error set from Royal Canadian Mint and they specifically show a toonie called a double mountain relief under the errors , the coins you show look like one of these specimens
