Today at the flea market my coin dealer asked me what kind of album I put my type coins in. I told him I had a Dansco, and him and the guy next to him both gave me funny looks. He suggested that I switch to an Intercept Shield album (of which I already have one, love it dearly) because over time the Dansco albums can leave a ring of brown toning on all of the coins. He told me he had examples but I didn't get a chance to look at them.
So has anyone had any problems with using a Dansco album? Should I take his advice and sell my current Dansco and pick up an Intercept Shield album to put my type coins in?

I have heard reports and seen toning on modern or 90% silver issues from intercept shields. I have never owned an intercept but my danscos have toned less than my whitman or wayte rays. Below are negative quotes/experiences from an intercept discussion on another forum. Note that were nearly an equal number of positive experiences and praises for the intercepts: "I just pulled out my Washington quarter intercept Shield album (1932-1998) and all my proof coins have hazed over very badly. I assembled an identical set in a Whitman album at the same time and they're all fine. Needless to say, I'm quite irritated at the moment. Will post pictures as soon as my camera battery has recharged. Oddly enough, the Statehood Quarter album seems to be fine. Must be something in the paper. Who do I sue?" "Their Statehood Quarter album not only didn't stop toning, the coins in it are toning FASTER than the ones in a Whitman album sitting right next to it on the same shelf. All my proofs AND circulation strikes are turning fugly. STAY FAR FAR AWAY FROM intercept SHIELD ALBUMS!"

I don't think its really the album you put your coins in, but its the environment you store your albums with your coins in them. I live in Montana where there is 0% moisture in the air. Their stored in the basement in constant temperatures. No problems with Dansco albums here. Ty

Where I live, humidity is a huge factor. Constant 80-90%, especially during the summer. It's awful. I really need a better way to store my coins than to just have albums in my closet. It's an easy temporary solution but I'm planning on keeping these coins for as long as I live, so I'd like for them to at least last that long. Any storage suggestions?

Yes, get a huge plastic container and get some silica gel packs - you can redehydate them by putting them in the oven or in the microwave. Alternatively get a dehumidifier.

As noted a dehumidifier is the way to go. Those Silica Gels are only good for a short time and for confined spaces. I too live in an area of high humidity. I use Whitman Albums. I have 97 of them now and have been using them for many, many years. Actually started putting coins in Whitman Folders when I was a kid and moved them all to the Albums eventually. Been doing this for well over60 years and absolutely no toning, tarnishing, corroding or anything else. I have a medical condition so I use a nice dehumidifier in my basement and have central air and it's on almost all the time. Not in Winter of course. Each Album is in a Freezer type zip lock bag with as much air pushed out as possible. I would think regardless of Dansco, Intercept, Whitman or even those cheap Littletons that there would be no problem if properly voided of humidity and air.

I have had some toning in my Dansco's, but then again I have had toning in my Whitman's, Littletons and Waite Raymond's. and I have seen toning in Intercept Shield Albums as well

scoutjim, is it an unpleasant, brownish ring of toning? That's what my coin dealer told me happened in Dansco albums.
Also, I have a completely off-topic question, how do you open a PCGS slabbed coin without damaging it?
