AU53? I don't know how to grade these though.

The obverse looks AU, the reverse looks XF - I can't make a decision! Very nice SQL with a buff pic.

thanks for the inputs. I guess it isn't clear enough in the photos, but every area that is "lit up" in contrast to the rest of the field, is mint luster....meaning there is little to no wear. Basically, almost the entire obverse is covered in mint luster. Taking that into consideration, how do some of you arrive at an XF grade?

My first reaction was low MS from the first two pictures of the obverse. Then when I saw the reverse, I thought that there is wear due to the lack of definition and (perceived) lack of luster. So in thinking that, I thought since the reverse had wear the obverse must have it as well and I was missing it so I got stuck on AU obverse / XF reverse. Probably faulty reasoning but there it is.

Wait a minute... no wear? Come on. Tip of the breast chain mail... shield details... horizontal lines in the wall. It's a very high EF, but not AU and certainly not MS! Still, a beautiful coin. I used to not like the SLQ's but they are growing on me. Still hate the Buffalo nickel though...

Quote: Wait a minute... no wear? Come on. Tip of the breast chain mail... shield details... horizontal lines in the wall. It's a very high EF, but not AU and certainly not MS! No it is not MS, but many of the "weaknesses" you point out are mostly due to strike...with slight wear on the high points. Here is a fact....it takes very little wear to remove luster from a coin, so areas that are coated with luster have very little wear. When you see lots of luster on a coin, you need to consider strike weakness on areas that are not fully defined. I know that I always harp on "luster" in these threads, but it is absolutely crucial in determing a grade for slqs in this grade range, as well as many others. The fact of the matter is that there are MS65 slqs out there with less detail than this one has at AU50....but it has coated thick with luster to the tips of the devices, hence the grade. NGC graded it AU50, and it is solid high end for the grade at minimum imho. This is in no way or shape an XF coin. I have a PCGS 1928-s that graded AU55, and it has similar detail and does not have near the luster that this coin has.

Gem piece! I was going to call it at least 53 before I read the last post. Either those are rub marks on the reverse, or the eagle is flying into a hailstorm

I am still learning about grading this but at least I was correct in interpreting strike weakness as opposed to wear on the obverse. Thank you for posting, johnny, it is a very nice coin.

Either those are rub marks on the reverse, or the eagle is flying into a hailstorm Yeah, there are some circ hairlines that my camera tends to magnify on the reverse..lol. If I did not own this coin nor the grade, I probably would have gone with AU-53 too. The obverse looks 55 to me, but the reverse brings it down a bit...though it still cartwheels pretty well. Folks tend to be pretty hard on slqs on this forum. I owned an ICG XF40 briefly that most folks graded F-15. Though I agree it was overgraded, it was not THAT overgraded.

23 S SLQ are known for soft strikes. The SLQ series is a TOUGH series to grade, much like Buffalo nickels. As there are dates/mm that are treated, almost like their own series within a series. I am at AU53. Would be a 55, but the detail in the wings is really soft on this one. NICE coin, by the way.
