Check your local coin shop yet? A lot of times they have circulated cents and rolls for very cheap.

All you really have to do is go on line in Google and type in coin dealers. Problem with asking others about a good coin dealer on line is you have no idea who is saying what. A coin dealer could be telling you to go to xxxxxx since it's the best place on Earth for coins. Yet just promoting himself. Similar question has been posted many times on this forum. Not sure if it works but you could try the SEARCH tab on this forum for coin dealers. Naturally if you acquire enough posts on this forum, you could buy and sell coins here. Not always but more than likely you would get the best deals from CCF Members. Although you live in such a remote area, have you tried all your relatives and neighbors? Sometimes in such remote areas people tend to have jars, cans, boxes of old coins just sitting there.

I know the hesitation of buying off E-bay but there are some sellers that are legit. You should look for some very high volume coin sellers on e-bay, then read the feedback and make an educational decision. I track about 10 sellers my self out of the hundreds on there. They guarantee their coins to be authentic and the nice part is after you purchase them and you do not like them in hand they will refund you.
BUT I do agree with just carl and that you get decent deals from CCF Members.
Good Luck John

Remember this, 95% of all the wheat cents were struck in the 40's and 50's so buying rolls you are going to get a TON of unneeded duplicates. there are some dealers that do market rolls with only earlier dates, but since they HAVE to search them to separate out the early dates you can count on only finding the common dates in these rolls. (These rolls will also be more expensive.)

after a few rolls the law of diminishing returns rears its ugly (yet very dignified) head.

I bought a mixed candy tin of old coins at a yard sale on the weekend. Part of what was in the box was 15 1943 USA pennies. All like the magnet and all are pretty worn. Does any one know why this collector was focused on 1943s? cheers Liverpool

1943 was the only year for Steel cents. My mom was born in 1943, that is why I have a little stack of them. I did the kick start on 1909-1940 Wheaties a while back. Shame that you don't have a LCS that is the route I went with and was very happy. I got a 1909 VDB for $7.00, you can see the individual lines on the ears of wheat, so it's worth more than $7.00

Hey frodo, I was very hesitant about ebay aswell. But I'm 4 purchases in and loving it. Haven't had any issues yet, and if you buy from high rating people, you shouldn't have any problems! Good luck with your search, I need to buy a roll of War Nickels to finish my jefferson set, only found 3 while coin roll hunting in a couple months, so gotta buy a roll or two :)

Like a lot of others, I started amassing wheat pennies by roll searching boxes of pennies that I'd get from a bank. Not sure of what you choice of banks are, but by doing so it is slow but steady work. You have to search a lot of boxes to start to have a good collection of wheats. Like was said earlier, I've found a lot of coins from the '40's and '50's, but I've found enough of the other years to keep me coming back.
The thing about finding them in rolls is that they're cheap. However I feel that because you live rural your choice of coins is going to be limited. I used to live in a small town in Illinois and found that coins tend to stay in their locale and seldom travel far and eventually you'll see just about every penny the banks have to offer so you'll have to travel further afield in order to keep your hobby going.
You may want to see if your local bank will order boxes of coins for you.

Quote:need to buy a roll of War Nickels to finish my jefferson set, only found 3 while coin roll hunting in a couple months NOOO! ! ! if you have been hunting for a couple months that is not enough time, it took me almost a year to get a full set of War Nickels from CRH, they are still out there. My new policy on buying War Nickels is they have to be EF-AU at least. Quote: You may want to see if your local bank will order boxes of coins for you. At my bank if I want them to order when they have coins on-hand they said they will charge me, I never asked how much but that just makes sense if they have $300 in pennies and you want them to order more then they don't want to have to pay for the transport and security from brinks or whoever they go though.
