I stopped in the local Pawn Shop yesterday, they try not to deal in Coins or PM's but if they do take some in they often have then for sale at just 3% over spot. I claim to know little/nothing about Morgans,(other than there are more than a few fakes around!), but I pick up a fair amount of silver bullion from them. I feel like I have gotten some good deals but this one was,(I am afraid!), too good to be true! He quoted me a price of $16 after tax.
1882- S, Morgan it weighs in at 26.62 grams. The thing that I noticed, (after I got it home!), first was there is a black shadow around the stars next to the date. As if this black was sprayed on.
What say you? Fake or Real?

The weight's within correct range. My first impression looking at the obverse is that it's een cleaned - badly. The reverse is downright ugly, and I'm not sure quite what to make of it from a photo as opposed to examining it in hand, but my hunch from looking at that side is that it spent some time in the ground. Likely genuine, but numismatically challenged.

Thank you Lucky, That's very interesting. Nothing thought of a ground find possiblity. The details just look so fresh/clean to me but I guess a lot of these type Morgans were not really circulated, it clearly has its' shear of scratches but no dings. I do not have a micro, but under a strong mag glass it almost looks like this was painted a tan or cream color and maybe over sprayed black? I will try some acetone and see what that does.
Thanks again, Paul.

Compare this Morgan with the one pictured on this website under the heading "Environmental Damage" - more severely impaired than yours, but certainly some similarity in appearance.

The "black shadow" around the stars is what is referred to as pull away toning. I have seen examples that have been artificially produced but this one appears legitimate. The reverse, however has environmental damage but for $16 no worries.

Yes, at $16 you can't complain.

Real, cleaned, damaged, not a bad deal for $16.
