Another quezzie, this time I am asking about information including websites on one of the types of coin I seem to have a penchant for - these are the coins produced by the Netherlands which, although I don't know much about them I think might be a form of token coinage?
Anyway, those copper duits were produced regionally in the Netherlands and have place names like Hollandia and West Frisia on them. I currently only own about four of them bought them for prices about £1.50-£2.50 they look about fine and it's hard to find any that are in a much better condition. A price guide would be nice if anyone can direct me to a good website for that sort of thing. Also any other good informational sites would be really useful. Thanks a bunch.

What era, 17th or 18th centuries?

You know these also circulated to some extent in Northern Britain, namely Scotland, as a bodle or 2 pence coin?

Yep, pass this Dutchie.

Every duit was worth AS SMALLEST DENOMINATION 1/8 stuiver, so You could expect also coins from 1/2 duit (1/16 stuiver) and 2 duit (1/4 stuiver).

After the Pacification of Ghent in the year 1577 the old monetary system of 1 denier=3 mijt, 1 gigot =6 mijt, 1 liard =12 mijt, the 7 northern provinces of the Netherlands change their currency.

You have to know that the resentment of Spanish Rule in the Low Countries and the spread of Protestantism resulted in the Great Dutch Revolt in between the year 1572-1585. The Dutchies struggle for freedom lasted 80 years against the Spanisch Occupation Force!

1579- 1648 was the most productive period of the duit as daily currency. In the year 1670 the minting process became mechanized, and from that year on the Dutch strike also coins for their colonies, which mostly contain the logo of the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, the V.O.C.
In the year 1694 duit changed it's appearance a little bit, as their became the provincial scutcheon at the obverse and the name of the province at the backside.

In the year 1794 the Low Countries were conquered by armies of the Revolutionary French and the nation was called the Bataafsche Republiek (Batavian Republic) in between 1795 and 1806; in 1806 Bonaparte proclaimed the Kingdom of Holland, and put his brother Louis at the throne. In the aftermath of the Napoleon Wars the northern and southern provinces were property of the House of Orange, until the Belgian people revolted in 1830 and bought their own king from England, Leopold I.

FALSIFICATIONS ARE KNOWN FROM THE GERMEN CITY OF RECKHEIM, WHICH CONTAINS MANY FANTASYNAMES OR WRITING ERRORS OF DUTCH DUIT.

THE VALUE IN THE NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES OF 1 DUIT CONTAINS 1/4 STUIVER.

These duits ceased to be legal tender during the French occupation. So some of these coins roulated more than 200 years... and that is the main reason why the pre-1702 issues are so worn.. In 1702 the weight of 1 duit was made more heavier to recognize it from its predecessors.

conclusion: no American grading possible.

It came from a Dutch written catalogue of ZONNEBLOEM B.V. in Amsterdam, edition 1979.

Most duits are still being found today by people with detectors all over Belgium and Holland.

Sometimes I obtain some spares in my duits. Would you consider it swapping with modern British commemoratives of 1 and 2 pounds?

Erich, I am not sure what commem £1 coins you are referring to (unless you just mean the bridge-type designs), however I have some £2's stored up and 50p's which have commemorative designs. It would depend on details on the duits too. I emailed you a couple days ago for a trade - why haven't you contacted me?

Sometimes Yahoo does strange things...

Nevertheless I have emailed NumisMatty UK and the Kid Collector another emailadress, which seems to be in working order.
