First off, I don't own this but was looking at it while visiting my local coin shop.

Second, I know the pictures aren't good enough for you guys but its the best I could do with my cell phone in the store.

This coin is being offered for about $525 and it looks pretty nice to me but I am no expert. The diamonds are not fully visible but partially. Nice toning, I am told it is most likely natural by the dealer but I don't know.

Wow. Tough coin. Looking high AU. Surfaces are questionable, I think the price reflects the fact that the dealer knows this.....

i decided 'questionable color' before reading Amida's post. Dealer would get this coin certified if they had any confidence in it.

This dealer does not have membership with any grading companys and therefor does not send anything out. He just buys what comes in and keeps it and sells it as is. Has been doing so for 40 years or so.

However, it doesn't mean he is correct about all these coins and I prefer them graded and slabbed since I am learning.

My guesses would be:

If you bought this coin and sent it to PCGS it would come back as real BUT questionable coloring.

I would pass on this..

Solotime, I will most likely pass. I thought it was good looking but wouldn't be interested if its questionable. =) Thanks for the comments so far guys. I need to focus on my quarter and half eagles anyway.

you can always offer to buy it contingent on it getting slabbed problem-free by ANACS, and offer to pay the $20 to have it slabbed.

Well neither them nor I have PCGS membership or any of the others. Does anyone in the coin community with memberships do favors? =)

I think it's real nice..

Does it have a 'rotation' on it like the photo shows?

ANACS does not need a membership to send coins in. That's why robbudo suggested it. I personally think it is a wise and safe route.

From what I can see, the coin is probably in the AU range. Feathers are stronger than typically seen in an XF, however the hair above the ear (which is a critical high point), and the separation of the diamond band from the front hair curl are both too difficult to discern.

The bottom right picture has some suggestions of whizzing. You may want to look closer to see if this is the case. If so, the toning may have been added to hide the whizzing (I just learned this tip on coin community forum!). I also think the coloring is questionable, despite the coin having nice eye appeal.

All that said, as counterpoint look at this coin: 141284543321. If I saw it raw, I'd run the other way. But it has more approvals than a mail-order stamp dealer! If you do offer to buy the coin contingent on successful grading, try to get the seller to commit that if the coin comes back graded he will sell you the coin at the agreed price and consider using PCGS or NGC. I am aware of a similar situation where a Morgan dollar came back from NGC one grade higher than expected, and the seller refused to sell it at handshake-agreement price. Good luck!

Could just be the pic, but color is sorta funny to my eyes...like it was cleaned and chemically retoned. Just my gut reaction.
