Here is a picture of a cent that I picked up about 15 years ago. I kept it because of it's unusual color. I have never seen a cent this gold. Any ideas? it is 1983

Hi Cindy - can you post a picture with a 'normal' copper cent of a similar luster (i.e. your gold penny next to a red copper cent)?

Thank Cindy - I have a goldish toned cent in my collection but not like the one you have there. It may be a plated coin. I'll see if I can find my 'gold' cent and post a pic here.

Very similar. Maybe some kind of marketing stunt?

There are known so called brass plated coins that come from the mint http://koinpro.tripod.com/Brass.htm but yours looks very shiny so maybe yours was plated outside the mint. John1

Interesting. The 1981 I have was kicking around in a coin jar for nearly 2 decades. It is plated with only subtle evidence on the reverse devices (wear). I figured after 20 years, I could spring for putting it in a flip.

I'm pretty sure those brass plated cents were done outside the mint too.

Your cent looks plated or coated to me as well, I have found a few that look similar. I have also been fortunate enough to find two of the "Brass Cents" (a 1997P and 1998P) and they are completely different in appearance. The original planchet had a improper mix. In-hand it is fairly easy to tell the difference. I hope this helps.
