What do you think about this morgan. I think that it was a weak die because of the wear in the hair and other places and lack of on the neck and chest of the eagle.

I would have to agree that there was something going on with the strike. That coin is unbelievably clean in the fields. I thought the early 1880's were known for very good strikes, but maybe I'm thinking of something else. That being said, there really isn't much in the photos to detract from grade here. At least I don't think so. Looks like the chin area, including the neck and fields right there is the only real chatter going on. The hair above the ear just puzzles me. The "cotton balls" look really strong too. Becky and the other Morganites should be along soon enough. I have to believe this is pretty high MS, but I could be wrong. I have a 65PL from ANACS and I see this as comparable, if not on the high end of that grade...But hey, grading is not one of my strong points.

Before I give an opinion I wonder if you have weighed and measured your coin?

Nice coin. I'll say at least MS-63.

It's just something I do as part of grading and evaluating, get an accurate weight and dimensions to see how close to specs the coin/planchet is.

The 81-S and 82-S are about the two strongest strikes seen in Morgan dollars. If the flatness above the ear is due to a weak strike, and not wear, it would probably be the weakest one I have seen. I would say au58 or ms62/63.
