I used to go to the bank and get rolls of pennies back in the early 1960's, always looking for one of the rare ones I never did find. As I grew a little older my interests changed and I never did go roll hunting again. Since joining the CCF I have been reading posts from the members about interesting things they have found.

While at my bank today as a lark I asked if they had any rolls of half dollars. They did and I got a whopping two rolls. Went home and found a 1967 in one of them. Not exactly the mother lode but was kind of fun. When I was a kid I never had enough money to get a roll of halves. Imagine what I might have found in 1962.

Great story Grr. Since recently joining this forum, I've started doing the basics, like checking my change when I get home before throwing it in the "change" bucket. I haven't done that in 30 years. No telling what I've looked over.

When I was a little kid back in the sixties I'd go to the bank and get a roll of silver dollars with my lawn mowing money for the month. (I mowed lawns for 50 cents and had about 10 yards to do each week.). I'd usually pull out one coin and take the other 19 coins back and put those in my savings account. I'd have been a lot better off if I had saved all 20 coins every month! Woulda coulda shoulda.

Finding anything now is luck and a lot of determination. Things can still be found though so that's good.

Wow westernsky, you have reminded me that I opened my first savings account with two silver dollars. I have always regretted that.

We used to go through bags of nickels in the early 60's and pull out the Buffalos and key date Jeffersons. Couldn't afford to keep everything so the War Nicks went back to the bank.

In 1964/65 THAT priority changed just a bit.
Rest in Peace

When I was young I went through over 100 rolls of half dollars my Grandparents had saved over the years from circulation. (they actually owned and operated a small general store and saved all halves and dollar coins) This was in the early/mid seventies and from what I recall most all were silver with many 40% Kennedys. I pulled a lot of Walkers, Franklins and a few Barbers for my collection. Many doubles went back into the rolls and back into the safe. I'm sure the rolls were turned into the bank sometime later. I try not to think about that part too much...

Listening to you guys reminiscing makes me miss my Grandpa. He was a huge coin collector. He passed when I was 10yrs old. I wish I could ask him questions about his experiences....
