I've had this one for a long time, I believe it was one of the first IHCs I ever got. But for as long as I've had it, it's been coated in this thick black stuff that I think might be some sort of enamel or tar? I do know that a days-long acetone soak did nothing to help it. Any advice, or is this cent stuck like this forever?

I have a coin with stuff like that. Soaked it in distilled water for a while. I would not use anything on coppers besides distilled water and Verdi-care. I know people use acetone but I do not trust it on coppers.

if acetone didn't do anything, nothing that is remotely safe with coins will do anything. Maybe a toothpick after a few days in acetone might do something, though. If it is one of your first indians, just keep it.

I see a fair amount of pitting on the obverse fields.
I would keep it only as a hole-filler until something better came along.

Even without the black gunk that piece is severely damaged. It can't be "saved".

I don't think this can be saved, too much environmental surface damage.

Yeah, don't try to clean it. Anything under that gunk is gone.

I would just keep it if it was one of your first Indians.

It's pretty bad to do anything with.
